Margaret Mead Elementary School

Lewis delivered this new 78,000-square-foot school, built to replace an existing school that was in session during construction.

The three-story school includes 30 classrooms, art/science/music rooms, library, cafeteria, gymnasium, administration and covered outdoor space. Construction consisted of shallow foundations, slab-on-grade, structural steel with buckling-restrained braces and slab-on-metal deck. The exterior is primarily structural stud framing with CMU veneer and metal panels plus an aluminum storefront system.

The site had limited buildable area due to the existing school and an adjoining wetland, which we protected with three stormwater detention tanks and two stormwater detention ponds.
