Fred Hutch Cancer Center G2 Imaging Expansion

The Project
On the second level of Fred Hutch Cancer Center’s Sloan Clinic Building 1 (called Building G internally), Lease Crutcher Lewis recently completed a five-phase remodel across a 33,000-square-foot floorplate. The work was carefully phased to allow construction to proceed without disrupting clinical operations or patient care in adjacent spaces and throughout the fully occupied hospital. Designed by NBBJ, the initial phases included the installation of new SPECT and PET-CT imaging systems — a key step in consolidating the nuclear medicine department while improving operational efficiency and enhancing the patient experience.

About
One of the biggest technical challenges involved integrating a complex MEP system into tight overhead spaces. This effort required close collaboration between Affiliated Engineers, the MEP designer, and UMC. Crews worked nights and weekends to minimize disruptions to patient care.

Join project manager Stu Hand for a tour of phase one of the project, a 9,600-square-foot buildout in the building’s northeast corner that included nine new PET uptake rooms. These specialized rooms are where patients receive an injection of a mildly radioactive imaging tracer before waiting for their scheduled scan. Each 115-square-foot room required approximately six tons of lead shielding to meet stringent safety requirements.
